CHEWING GUM

Gum is our daily consumption. But we don’t know more about gum’s ingredients and effects that affects to our body. Bubble gum was discovered by The Inventor Thomas Adams and assistance of Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1869. Most interesting thing is it was just a complete accident. At first General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was looking for rubber substitute.

But he found chicle that is ingredient of chewing gum suddenly. So he contracted Thomas Adams. A dams wasn’t able to make sap work as a substitute for rubber, but he thought that to use chicles in gum base. Then modern gum was invented. It was named “chiclets”. William J. White was a former popcorn salesman and he invented addition of flavoring.
Each gum has their own recipe that makes them different from the others. The ingredients are company’s secret. Some common ingredients are: powdered sugar, gum base (it makes the gum able to be continuously chewed again and again), glucose syrup, softeners, flavoring, sweeteners and coloring. Gum base formed from natural resins like sorva and jelutong. The flavors are also made from fruits and spices.

Having good influences in gum was proved already. So why do gums have bad influence? In my opinion it depends on gum’s quality and our habits. If gum consists of toxic substance (example: many sugar, chemical coloring substance etc) which is in your mouth, it will affect badly for your health exactly. Mostly kids love to chewing gum. But some of them have bad habit that is chewing all the time. So the action of chewing will influence badly for their stomach I think. But the theory that is an action of chewing stimulates a part of brain called hypothalamus which releases hormones which serve to keep us alert, was proved. Chewing gum burn up to 1000 calories a day. Also it can fight bad breath, protect our teeth from decay like a toothpaste. So gum has more good influences than bad influences.

Some interesting facts about gum:

- Philadelphia grocery store sold the first 5 pounds of Double Bubble for one penny a piece. The store sold out within hours.
- Double Bubble was included in ration kits for American soldiers serving in World War II.
- The biggest bubble ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was 22 inches in diameter.
- Scientists found a 9000 year old wad of chewing gum in Sweden.
- North American kids spend about a half-billion dollars on bubble gum every year, which translates to 40 million pieces every day, 1.6 million every hour, 26000 every minute or 444 pieces per second.
